Red Rocks Initiatives was founded in 2013 to find ways that tourism can benefit both travellers and tourism destinations in the Virunga Massif.
Red Rocks Initiatives is dedicated to integrating tourism and conservation for sustainable community development. Most importantly, we lobby for and market community-based tourism as part of the region’s development agenda.
Red Rocks Initiatives is a non-profit community-based organisation. We incorporate the eco-tourism agenda as part of our programmes to promote development around Virunga Massif. We involve the local community and forge partnerships with other like-minded organisations to promote regional community development. Our long-term objective is to ensure local communities benefit from their skills in trade, art, music, education. We want people to gain from sustainable tourism, while they help in environmental conservation and raise their living standards. We believe that all three are inextricably linked and therefore should be promoted together.
What’s new?
In 2020, Red Rocks Initiatives created a cause for raising funds to sustain our “Arts and Conservation” programs under the www.greeneract.com platform.
In order to make our cause a reality, we are seeking generous people and like-minded organisations to donate. Any amount donated, even small, is highly appreciated and your contribution will be vital to helping us succeed in planning our cause. With your donations, we will be in a position to sustain and promote talent of the local youth within our area, thus supporting the SDG (United Nations Sustainable Development Goals) by creating decent work and promoting gender equality.
If you’re interested in learning how you can help, please download the Greener Act app on your Android or iOS mobile phone and help us to make a positive impact in the local community.
Thank you from everyone at Red Rocks Initiatives!
How did Red Rocks start?
Red Rocks Initiatives complements the work of two other organisations. In 2011, Greg Bakunzi, the owner of Amahoro Tours, set up Red Rocks Rwanda as a social enterprise for the residents of the Musanze area (adjacent to the gorillas) to benefit from tourism. You can read more about the popular Red Rocks campsite, accommodation, restaurant, bar and activities on the Red Rocks page.
As ideas developed and people started getting excited about Red Rocks, Greg says “I decided it would be better to have one big box which enables everyone that was interested to try and develop his/her initiatives altogether. This is when I came up with the idea of registering a non-profit, by the name of Red Rocks Initiatives for Sustainable Development.
