In The Shadow of Chimpanzees

Bigodi, Kamwenge - Uganda

In the Shadow of Chimpanzees is the brainchild of primatologist Julia Lloyd, who has lived literally in - and now on the edge of - Kibale Forest in western Uganda since 1998. Julia led the team of rangers and researchers that first habituated the forest's chimpanzees for tourism. In the Shadow of Chimpanzees (a registered NGO) is developing a quality tourism programme for day visitors who can experience a butterfly garden, bird trails and Healing (medicinal plant) Garden. Pre-booked visitors can see and learn about human-wildlife conflict solutions such as beehive fences and an elephant trench. The guided walk with ex-poacher Silver Kyamukama is very popular! Visitors are welcome to join in for a kick-around at the much-loved community football pitch (during practices).

What are the aims of In The Shadow of Chimpanzees?

In the Shadow of Chimpanzees is based in and around Sunbird Hill, Uganda’s best private birding site on the edge of Kibale Forest.

In the photo are Silver Kyamukama, reformed poacher, retired ranger guide and site guide with Lilly Ajarova, CEO of Uganda Tourism Board and former CEO Ngamba Island (Chimpanzee Trust).

Sunbird Hill comprises 16 hectares of regenerating farmland bordering Kibale National Park. The area is repeatedly visited by chimpanzees, baboons, monkeys, the occasional otter, African bushbuck and the great African elephants herd (at night).

Based on data obtained from surveys on our most recent visitors, most recent visitors, the tourists’ favorites have been confirmed to be the numerous unique bird species (over 240), newly discovered African butterflies and moth species, as well as uniquely existing insects, reptiles, and frogs. These faunas have increasingly become our most treasured tourist attraction.

Sunbird Hill is a Ugandan bird ringing site and training centre for local wildlife enthusiasts and the team coordinates and carries out the NatureUganda Bird Population Monitoring Programme for the Kibale Conservation Area (comprising Kibale Forest, Semliki Wildlife Reserve, Semliki National Park, Katonga Wildlife Reserve, Lake Saka, Toro Botanical Gardens and Kafred Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary).
