Uganda is in total lockdown (to reduce spread of COVID-19) except for emergency vehicles, tourist vehicles and cargo (deliveries).
Diary of a Muzungu’s tips for staying sane during lockdown
- go for a walk / run or bike ride EVERY DAY. Get fit, and get those endorphins pumping around your body. You’ll thank me 😎
- gaze out of the window, often
- daydream about future travels
- drink water!
- look after yourselves
- watch the birds
- tend your garden, nurture some houseplants, buy some flowers
- check on your friends and family regularly, especially those who might be alone…
- focus on what you CAN do, not what you can’t
- read
- listen to audio books. Audible is amazing!
- don’t touch your eyes / mouth / nose unless you have washed your hands first
- cook yourself something special
- dance, baby!
- ask friends to recommend some new music
- don’t overdo the booze or weed
- keep a regular sleep routine
- focus on the positive – it’s there!
- wash your hands for 30 seconds with lots of soap
- change your mask daily. buy masks you can wash and iron. these disposable ones are an environmental nightmare.
- don’t buy stuff you don’t need. minimise spending.
- wake up early for the dawn chorus – it will lift your soul!
- rinse and repeat all of the above, daily
- spread the love
I have written extensively about #COVID-19 in Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya. For Uganda-specific health advice read Bracing ourselves for Coronavirus in Uganda. I’ve tried my best to keep information current but you’re always welcome to contact the muzungu directly for the latest advice.
See you on the other side! #StaySafeUG
Thank you for your daily updates Nagawa . Your site is good and have read it dear. Keep up the good work Nagawa. I do have friends abroad and would like to encourage them to come to Uganda soon . How would I do.it ? Do you have some good reading books that I can send them ? How much are they . Are some at the Uganda museum ? Bye and do have a nice week and best of luck in your efforts Nagawa . Mugenyi in Uganda.
Hi Mugenyi, nice to read from you and thanks for your appreciation.
The first thing I would recommend to your friends is my monthly newsletter. They can also follow Diary of a Muzungu on Facebook and Instagram.
The best guide to Uganda is the Bradt Uganda guide. It is comprehensive and contains sections on history, culture, wildlife in addition to hundreds of ideas about places to stay and visit. The first guide appeared 30 years ago and it is updated regularly. Read more about the Bradt Guide here.
The Uganda Society at the Uganda Museum also has a good selection of books, including some historical volumes.
I also recommend Uganda Safari, written by Andy Roberts, which is available for just 95,000 UG shillings. Your friends overseas should be able to buy copies of it on Amazon soon.
I have a long list of recommended reading – send me a message in a few weeks time – I am yet to publish it 🙂
